The Basics of HBOT
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, typically at 1.5 to 3 times normal atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, your blood can carry significantly more oxygen than is possible at normal pressure.
At sea level, breathing normal air, your blood oxygen saturation is about 97%. Most of this oxygen is carried by hemoglobin in red blood cells. HBOT dramatically increases the amount of oxygen dissolved directly in your plasma—the liquid portion of your blood.
This oxygen-rich plasma can reach areas that red blood cells cannot easily access, including damaged tissues with compromised circulation, providing the fuel needed for healing.
How Increased Oxygen Promotes Healing
Oxygen is essential for nearly every healing process in your body:
**Energy Production**
Your cells' mitochondria use oxygen to produce ATP, the energy currency that powers repair processes. More oxygen means more energy for healing.
**Collagen Synthesis**
Oxygen is required for producing collagen, the protein that forms the scaffolding for wound healing and tissue repair.
**Immune Function**
White blood cells need oxygen to kill bacteria and fight infection. HBOT enhances immune cell function.
**Stem Cell Mobilization**
HBOT stimulates stem cell release from bone marrow, increasing the body's regenerative capacity.
**Reduced Inflammation**
HBOT can reduce swelling and inflammation by constricting blood vessels while still delivering more oxygen.
**New Blood Vessel Formation**
Repeated HBOT sessions stimulate angiogenesis—the growth of new blood vessels in damaged areas.
What Happens During a Session
A typical HBOT session involves:
**1. Preparation**
You'll change into cotton clothing (no synthetic materials). Electronic devices and certain items cannot enter the chamber.
**2. Compression**
The chamber pressure increases gradually over 10-15 minutes. You may feel pressure in your ears, similar to flying or diving. Simple techniques like swallowing or yawning equalize this pressure.
**3. Treatment**
Once at treatment pressure, you breathe normally for 60-90 minutes. Many patients relax, read, or even sleep during this time.
**4. Decompression**
Pressure returns to normal over 10-15 minutes. You may feel your ears 'pop' as pressure equalizes.
Most patients find HBOT relaxing and comfortable. Our modern chambers are spacious with clear walls and communication systems.
Conditions Treated with HBOT
HBOT has FDA approval for specific conditions and is used off-label for many others:
**FDA-Approved Uses**
• Decompression sickness (the bends)
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Non-healing diabetic wounds
• Radiation tissue damage
• Severe infections
• Skin grafts and flaps
**Wellness and Optimization Uses**
• Athletic recovery and performance
• Traumatic brain injury and concussion
• Cognitive enhancement
• Anti-aging and longevity
• Chronic inflammatory conditions
• Post-surgical healing
• Lyme disease support
While some uses have more research support than others, HBOT's mechanisms of action suggest broad potential benefits.
What Results to Expect
Results from HBOT vary by condition and individual:
**Immediate Effects**
Some patients feel increased energy, mental clarity, or reduced pain after even a single session.
**Cumulative Benefits**
Most conditions require multiple sessions (often 20-40) for optimal results. Benefits often build over time as new blood vessels form and tissues regenerate.
**Maintenance**
Once a treatment series is complete, periodic maintenance sessions can help sustain benefits.
**Timeline by Condition**
• Acute injuries/recovery: 5-10 sessions
• Chronic conditions: 20-40 sessions
• Wellness optimization: Ongoing periodic sessions
• Athletic recovery: As needed around training/competition
We'll design a protocol based on your specific condition and goals, adjusting based on your response.
Is HBOT Right for You?
HBOT is safe for most people, but certain conditions require caution or may preclude treatment:
**May Not Be Suitable For**
• Untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
• Certain ear conditions
• Uncontrolled seizure disorders
• Some medications (consult with us)
**Special Considerations**
• Claustrophobia (we have strategies to help)
• Ear/sinus issues (may need ENT evaluation)
• Pregnancy (typically avoided)
At IAM Wellness, we offer modern hyperbaric chambers in a comfortable, clinical setting. Whether you're recovering from injury, optimizing athletic performance, or pursuing longevity, HBOT may be a valuable addition to your health protocol.
Schedule a consultation to discuss whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is right for your needs and goals.
